Deacons play an important role in the church. Each church member is assigned a deacon. When there is serious illness, an accident, death, or other significant event, the church member's deacon will be notified. Of course, it goes without saying, that the pastor is also notified.

It is in Acts 6 a need arose, per complaints, and from there the office of deacon was born. They would tend to the ministrations of the widows so the disciples could carry on in their ministry of spreading God's word. Seven men who were of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and having wisdom were chosen to be the first deacons.

1 Timothy 3:8 lists the qualifications for deacons, even including their wives character as well.
